Actor Jonathan Groff was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday night.

The gay, Grammy-award winning actor, best known for Looking and the Netflix show Mindhunter, is currently appearing in New York City in a new production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Besides talking about the show, Groff, 34, talked to Colbert about his huge admiration for one of the show’s other guests: Julie Andrews.

In fact, he was able to prove his love of the actress stretches back to his earliest years. When he was aged 3, he was so obsessed with the movie Mary Poppins, his mom allowed him to dress as the character for Halloween, complete with lipstick, trademark hat, and bag.

Groff described himself as a “deep, deep, deep fan” of Andrews. “We had the VHS of Mary Poppins and my mom will tell you that I watched it every single day.”

Colbert compliments Groff for having a “great mom” for allowing him to dress up as Poppins.

Colbert then goes on to play an old video clip, from 1988, of the young Groff in his Halloween costume. It’s toward the start of his interview (at the 3-minute point below). Groff’s older brother is also in the video.

Groff had never met Julie Andrews in person before but told Colbert he met her backstage before coming on to set. He said she was, “kind of like everything you wish she was … so funny and kind.”
