Mum stops spending £150 a week on takeaways and loses six stone

A woman has lost almost six stone by ditching her £8,000-a-year takeaway habit.

Sarah Pattison was spending up to £150 on fast food every week, ordering either a Chinese or a McDonald’s takeaway most nights.

During this time, the 26-year-old weighed 17 stone and struggled to fit into a size 20.

The stay-at-home mum, from Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, says: ‘I felt really sluggish and just couldn’t be bothered to cook so I’d have a takeaway or shove in a ready meal.’

But when Sarah was offered the Covid vaccine prematurely, because of her obesity, she wanted to make a change.

She adds: ‘I’ve always wanted to lose weight and when I got offered the Covid vaccine early – due to being overweight – I knew I needed to do something.’

In April 2021, Sarah joined the Cambridge 1:1 diet and ate just meal replacements for the first four months – in order to kick-start her weight loss.

However, this was particularly challenging for the 26-year-old – who had previously started her mornings with a McDonald’s breakfast and ordered a takeaway most evenings.

She adds: ‘The first four days were really tough.

‘I was used to have so much food so it was really difficult only having about 600 calories a day.’

But the diet worked and Sarah successfully started to shed the pounds.

Now, just months on, the mum has lost 5st 9lbs and has reached her target weight of 11st 4lbs – and hopes to keep up her hard work.

She now prefers home-cooked meals such as salads, steamed vegetables and Quorn, and will walk four to six miles a day to stay fit.

Sarah says: ‘I feel so much better after losing the weight – I finally have energy again.

‘I used to always make up an excuse as to why I couldn’t go somewhere and I never wanted photos of myself taken.

‘Now I am happy to pose for a photo and all my friends who hadn’t seen me over lockdown barely recognised me.

‘They didn’t believe I had lost weight so quickly and all thought I had had surgery.’

Sarah has also saved money from cutting out fast food – which she sets aside for days out with her kids.

What’s more, her mental and physical health is in a much better place.

‘I have so much more energy to get up and go,’ she adds.
