Kristen Stewart directs Boygenius’ queer new music video – and fans are ‘not OK’

Indie supergroup boygenius have released their Kristen Stewart-directed music video ‘The Film’ – and fans have been left emotionally bereft.

boygenius, the powerhouse pop group made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, released a 14-minute video featuring visuals for three tracks, “$20”, “Emily I’m Sorry”, and “True Blue”, on Friday (31 March).

The tracks all feature on the group’s debut album The Record – also released on Friday – while ‘The Film’ focuses on one band member per song.

Bridgers stands in a muddy monster truck stadium for “Emily I’m Sorry”, Baker runs around a rural home and works on a junk car in “$20”, while “True Blue” aptly features Dacus painting a house blue with the help of her bandmates.

Fans have reacted particularly strongly to the “True Blue” portion of the video, where Bridgers and Dacus and then Bridgers and Baker have, for want of a better phrase, a good old snog.

“I’m not okay” one fan wrote, next to a screenshot of Bridgers and Dacus kissing.

Another wrote: “This took twenty years off my life but in a good way,” in response to the video.

“It’s a big day for sad gay people (me)” another wrote.

For many fans, the real punch to the sapphic sensibilities is the fact that the music video was directed by queer icon and Twilight star Kristen Stewart.

“Kristen Stewart convincing boygenius to make out with each other for a movie is so me when I was 5 and made my Barbies kiss,” one user hilariously wrote.

Another added: “Boygenius & Kristen Stewart: you will be receiving an invoice from my therapist.”

Introducing ‘The Film’ at its premiere on Thursday (30 March), Kristen Stewart said of boygenius: “It was a knockout, fall-down honor to be asked to try to distill the incredible fireworks show that pops up when these three come together… I wish I had them to look up to when I was a kid.”

boygenius, who recently announced US tour dates, have also seen their debut LP The Record met with warm reactions from critics and fans alike, with the album earning a 8.2 on music site Pitchfork.

One fan called the album “beautiful in the most heartbreaking ways.”

The Record by boygenius is out now.

Dogs are not only man’s best friend, they’re also man’s best muse. For centuries, artists have drawn inspiration from their four-legged family members, crafting their portraits in various mediums to express emotion and memorialise moments. A new exhibition at the Wallace Collection in London, UK, pays tribute to this long-standing canine love affair by unleashing a carefully curated selection of dog portraiture. From Leonardo da Vinci’s detailed deerhound’s paw to David Hockney’s slumbersome sausage dogs, there are over 50 woofs of art on display, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and …

SNP MP John Nicolson cleared of cyberbullying Talk TV presenter Nadine Dorries

Scottish National Party MP John Nicolson has been cleared of cyber-bullying Tory MP and Talk TV presenter Nadine Dorries, following a six-month inquiry.

The SNP’s culture spokesman is understood to have been cleared by the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS), following a string of tweets relating to Dorries.

In the tweets, Nicolson criticised Dorries – who was culture secretary at the time – and also “liked” others which described her as a “horrible disgusting woman” and a “mendacious, vacuous Tory goon,” as well as being “thick as two short planks”.

Details of the case have not been made public, due to confidentiality agreements both politicians had to sign, but documents seen by Politico suggest that the MP for Ochil and South Perthshire was cleared of any misconduct earlier this month.

As the political news outlet reported, Nicolson was investigated over Twitter activity which took place in November 2021, following a Commons select committee session where Dorries gave evidence.

During the hearing, the pair engaged in a fiery exchange – with Nicolson questioning the Mid Bedfordshire MP’s use of Twitter – and when the session finished, he went on to like or retweet at least 25 different posts about her.

Dorries did not refer John Nicolson to the ICGS over the tweets until a year later, in October 2022, after she left her Cabinet role.

This is the first case of a British politician being investigated for allegedly cyberbullying another MP, and Dorries can now decide whether or not to appeal the ruling.

In a comment shared widely in the media, a House of Commons spokesperson said: “Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS) operates on the basis of confidentiality for the benefit of all parties.

“Therefore, we cannot provide any information on any complaint, including whether or not a complaint has been received.”

Nicolson is the subject of an on-going, separate investigation by the privileges committee

He has been accused of a “clear breach” of parliamentary rules by tweeting details of a letter sent by speaker of the house, Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

The ICGS was established in 2018 with the aim of cracking down on misconduct in parliament.

Christine and the Queens hails pop icon Madonna

Christine and the Queens thinks Madonna is the “most emblematic female voice” in the pop world.

The 34-year-old singer worked with Madonna on his new album, ‘Paranoia, Angels, True Love’, and he relished the experience of collaborating with the pop icon, who plays a mysterious character who appears throughout the record.

Chris told the BBC: “What is the most emblematic female voice we have in the pop landscape? She has such an imprint on everybody’s subconscious.

“She did a very risky FaceTime when I explained the whole concept and I was like, ‘Do you want to be an actress in this weird musical? To be exactly also the great actress you are?’ Because she’s multifaceted. She’s not even enclosed in one person.

“And she said, ‘Yes!’ I think because she was enticed by the insanity of the whole thing. She was like, ‘You’re crazy. I’ll do it!’

“I sent her lines that I wrote because she’s embodying the character of Big Eye, a very ambivalent ‘being of light’. We don’t really know if it’s AI, a true angel, or maybe my mum?

“Or if it’s maybe me. She’s has this voice that encloses all of the others and she’s piercing through in the record to just give the wisdom we need.”

Madonna features on three tracks on the new album, and Chris insists he’d be happy to return the favour one day.

The singer shared: “She sent me the lines and she delivered in such a perfect way. So I had the emotions of a stage director having the best, best performer to direct, and she delivered in exactly the right way.

“I’m truly joyful that she trusted me enough to give me this impeccable piece of theatre. And also, any time she wants me to just do something for her, I’ll be of service all my life.”
